Unexpected error on system.update(entity)

Hi.

I have a custom entity with a n:1 relation to case. When I save the custom entity I want to update the case with a date, however I'm getting "unexpected error" when I do a service.update on the case.

I have tried  to create an entity with logicalname "incident" and id customentity.relatedentity.value-ish and the add the value I want to update. I have also done a retrieve on the case using the Id and then add the field. Both these exits with an "unexpected error".

I have tried this both pre and post stage and no difference.

The trace says among other things:

Web Service Plug-in failed in SdkMessageProcessingStepId: {8DCDBB1B-EA3E-DB11-86A7-000A3A5473E8}; EntityName: incident; Stage: 30; MessageName: Update; AssemblyName: Microsoft.Crm.Extensibility.InternalOperationPlugin, Microsoft.Crm.ObjectModel, Version=5.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35; ClassName: Microsoft.Crm.Extensibility.InternalOperationPlugin; Exception: Unhandled Exception: System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation.

The funny thing is I don't think there are any XElements to be serialized... Has anyone encountered something similar?

Thanks
