Custom HTML formatting for mails in workflows and dialogs in CRM 2013

We have a CRM 2013 on premise installation and are using custom workflows/dialogs for some business tasks. One aspect of these workflows is that they send mails to customers. Unfortunately, it is very hard to format the mails with the built-in HTML editor so that they don't look horrible. This is due to the HTML editor in CRM itself that adds superfluous tags and attributes. I haven't found a way to replace this component or to replace the created HTML with well-formatted HTML. The most promising way was to replace the contents through the Chrome developer tools. This approach seemed to work and the new content was displayed correctly, but CRM raises an error when I try to save the content.

All existing workarounds seem to target the "normal" HTML editor for end users but not the back end that is used to edit mails in workflows/dialogs and E-Mail templates.

Is there any way to edit the HTML source that is used for the workflows and dialogs?
